A very common complaint I get from home based business owners is that they just feel completely overwhelmed and don’t know where to start when it comes to get everything they need done for their business.
I know I have been there, and for me its a time where EVERTHING seems to stop. Even through I’m “working” nothing seems to get done! And worse still, we let all the other things that need our attention become excuses and we try to use these as the reasons that nothing is getting done!
This especially happens when we work from home as we are nearly always there right, so we see everything else that can pull us away from work (hands up who is guilty of getting stuck into housework when you should be concentrating on your business!) AND other people ask little favors of us and we never say no, right!!!
So lets look firstly at the reasons this can happen. In my opinion there are two reasons in particular that this can happen.
Firstly, it can be because we have no real clue what we are doing and we can’t bear the thought of sitting down to another frustrating day of no results.
Secondly, it can be because we have made a lot of changes in our business, started to streamline offerings, get organised and get some results, and suddenly we realise how much work its going to take to get this up to scratch! This is usually the point where we realise why we were not getting results before we started to make these changes!
It’s the second reason that I want to help you with here.
The reason that we need to put the work in at the start is so we can put the structures in place so we can have the balance we want at a future date. Business structure and systems don’t just magically appear overnight, but once they are there, they can make your life a whole lot easier!
With that said, I can totally understand how it can all become overwhelming while trying to set this up, so here are my top tips for what to do when you have too much to do.
Back Away From It All For A While
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you could start sinking back into old habits. Best thing to do here is get away from it for a bit, a few days if you can. You need some time to think and take a few breaths. Go get a massage or your nails done, but make sure you get out of the house for a bit. You need a break and some down time to re-group, forget about it for a little bit so you can start to re-focus.
Make A List
Its time to get real now. Even though you might be feeling a little bit overwhelmed, this work still has to get done. This is your business at the end of the day and it still has to be managed and you still need to work at bringing in clients. So start making a list of all the things you have to do. Write down each task you have to complete and then separate them into projects. Decide what project you are going to tackle first and start working on the tasks.
Start Saying No
You now have a group of projects that you need to complete. These projects will usually be something to do with gaining clients so they are important! Do not start any new projects or allow anything else to take your focus until you get this work complete. Its time to put you and this business first!
Consider Getting Some Help
If I had a pound for every time someone told me they could not afford a virtual assistant!! I’m going to let you in on a little secret – My first VA worked 3 hours a week for me. I handed over loads of fiddly tasks that were simply taking up my time and really didn’t need me to do it. There are VA’s out there that you can hire for 10 hours a month. Imagine how much quicker your work would get done! Re-visit that list you made and highlight all the things you would like to hand over to someone to complete for you, then go and find yourself a VA!
If you start putting these tips into action today, and even if they don’t give you results straight away, just the very fact that you will do something about it will set you ahead of all the others out there that are choosing to do nothing and continue on without making any changes to improve their chance of success.
